Pupil Premium

What is Pupil Premium funding?

  • The Government is committed to narrowing the achievement gap between the families that are on lower income households and those that have higher incomes.
  • It has therefore given a set amount of money per child for every child that has been eligible for free school meals, has been in the care of the local authority in the last 6 years or has been adopted in the last 6 years.
  • It is then up to the school to decide how to spend the money so that all children can reach their potential.
  • Pupil Premium funding is allocated under a ‘financial year’ model rather than an ‘academic year’ model.
  • Our champions for Pupil Premium children are Tabitha Smith (Head teacher) Danielle Kenny (Attendance officer) and Larissa Ritchie (Staff governor).
  • We track the attainment and progress of pupils in receipt of Pupil Premium funding on a termly basis and report this to Governors
  • This strategy is reviewed annually with the full Governing Body in the Summer term.

 How did we use Pupil Premium Funding to support pupil progress and wellbeing in the Year 2019/20?

A Complex social and emotional needs and low levels of resilience have a detrimental impact on friendships, perception of ‘self’ and the ability to deal with disappointment. 
  • Restorative Approaches will be introduced and embedded throughout 2019/20.
  • New approach to behaviour management and conflict resolution will be introduced in September 2019.
  • Continue to employ a Pastoral Support Worker.
  • Move to a new EP provider for improved advice and support.
  • Specific 1:1 support assistant employed for our LAC pupils who display complex difficulties.

B Academic progress of our PP children in KS1 is not as strong as we want. This trend becomes minimal in KS2.

  • Writing is a focus for development on the School Development Plan 2019/20 with specific reference to teaching and learning in KS1.

How do we intend to use Pupil Premium Funding to support pupil progress and wellbeing in the year 2020/21?

A Complex social and emotional needs and low levels of resilience. Such needs will have been impacted upon by lockdown and school closure. They can have a detrimental impact on relationships, self-esteem, the ability to deal with disappointment and a capacity to learn. Schools have an important role to play in supporting all children to overcome any trauma and its resulting impact.
  • A renewed and reinforced focus on Restorative Approach to behaviour management throughout 2020/21.
  • New appointment of Deputy Head to provide and lead on in-house pastoral support for children.
  • Circle time and our PHSE scheme of work to be adapted in light of lockdown by the Deputy Head to focus on our values and relationships.
  • Return to school training undertaken by SLT.
  • Move to a new EP provider for improved advice and support.
  • Specific 1:1 support assistant employed for our LAC pupils who display complex difficulties.

  • The School Development Plan for 2020/21 will focus on Reading, Writing and Maths and be developed during the course of the first half of the autumn term ensuring we focus on the identified areas of need rather than on the assumed areas of need.
  • Interventions will be planned by teachers and delivered by a range of support staff without impacting on the access to a broad and balanced curriculum.

  • Have termly Pupil Progress meetings with a new system of internal data analysis to ensure no group gets 'forgotten'.
  • Tutor Trust which provided one to one tuition.

  • Free breakfast club for PP children to ensure they are in school and have had a healthy breakfast.
  • Attendance Officer who monitors those harder to reach families where attendance is impacted negatively.
  • Subsidised wraparound provision for families in receipt of certain benefits.
  • Introduction an online home learning package ready for immediate use, in case of a phase or whole school closure as a result of a national or local spike in COVID-19.

Sports Premium

The Government provides all schools with additional funding that is to be ‘ring fenced’ for improving the provision of PE and sport. The amount each school receives is calculated by reference to the number of children on roll.

Schools are accountable for how this money is spent; the amount we received in the year 2020/21 was £18,250.

As a result of this dedicated, ring fenced funding, it is expected that schools will see an improvement of provision and opportunity against 5 Key Indicators:

1. The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity.
2. The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement.
3. Increase the confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
4. Provide a broader range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.
5. Increase participation in competitive sport.

Dedicated PE Lead Teacher to drive improvements:

We have appointed a teacher to lead the development of sport at the school. Over the course of the academic
year 2019/20 we have seen an exciting and sustainable transformation of porting provision across the school.

The following is a snapshot of some of these changes:

• Purchased Real PE legacy package to offer staff CPD.
• All staff trained in the delivery of Real PE.
• TA’s attended a sports leadership course to up skill 5/6 sport leaders.
• Children from Years 1-6 offered lunchtime coaching sessions at least twice weekly.
• Sports Ambassadors working with the lunchtime coaches and promoting activities.
• New boys football team developed cached by external coach (start date January 2019).
• New girls football team developed coached by external coach (start September 2019)
• Attend PE association ‘Inspire’ Festival.
• Resources enhanced.
• Introduced the Daily Mail across the school.
• Manchester City Coach secured to work one/day/week alongside staff PE sessions and offer extra-curricular sessions.
• Skateboarding After School Club introduced.
• Basketball After School Club introduced.
• Football After School Club introduced.
• Sports Kits purchased to represent the school at sporting events - sponsorship agreed with local company.


Swimming at New Islington

In collaboration with the Local Authority, we take our year 4 class every week to the pools at east Manchester Leisure Centre, Beswick. The Local Authority’s advice is that Year 4 is the optimum age group to take, and that it is most effective to give them the full year of lessons.

We continue to encourage our pupils to swim regularly and the following reflects their standards, although we do not use Sports Premium Funding to provide additional lessons beyond Year 4:

85% of our Year 6 cohort swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 meters.
